Moving Beyond Obligation Into Alignment

by Nanci Bradley

A fun fact you may not know about me, is that I am very goal oriented. I feel incredibly motivated and in flow with life when I can focus my energy and attention towards a goal, usually in my past this has been education and work.

But eventually I reached the point where I had only work and one hobby, reading. Either I was working – on something for a course, one on one with a client or on admin for my business – or I was lazing on my couch reading a book, getting lost in another world.

Nanci, I can’t relate, I have way too much to do

Now, I know that most people aren’t in the phase of life where ‘having too little to do’ is something they struggle with. More often than not, it is the other way around!

But in either of these cases, there is an altogether different struggle occurring underneath – the over identification with your skills, with what you can do and offer the world. The process of basing your sense of worth and value on what you can do, and therefore forcing yourself into spaces that may not truly feel right to you, in an effort to prove something to yourself and to the world.

Have you ever gone out even when you were completely drained, just to avoid disappointing your friends?

Have you ever taken on extra work just to prove you deserved your job or belonged on the team?

Have you ever said ‘yes’ to something you didn’t have the capacity for, just to avoid seeming difficult or unreliable?

Most people are guilty of at least one of these, if not all of them.

Now in my case, of actually having too little to do, I was focusing so much on one skill set, on trying to prove my worth in one area, that I left no space for enjoyment, fun or other passions.

When we box ourselves in, creating this identity based on our life in its current form – our job, friends, family, and roles – we can lose the ability to flow into new arenas, perhaps one’s that are better suited to us then anything we are doing currently.

We become stuck in a life that doesn’t really suit us, draining our energy and not giving enough back.

Getting In Flow

Now, you may not be at the point of burn out, exhaustion or feeling completely stagnant in life. Maybe there are just a few areas in your life that aren’t fully in flow and alignment at the moment.

In my case, my work was something I was truly passionate about and enjoyed, it was just my fixation on either working or lazing about at home that was causing a sense of stagnation in my life. And so, for me the solution was simple, getting out of my comfort zone and trying new things. Searching for new hobbies and interests that give me energy and light me up inside.

For you, this could mean something very different. Perhaps it will mean prioritising a passion that has been placed on the back burner, or setting boundaries to give yourself extra time, or simply saying no when you want to.

The most important thing to remember is to trust your inner knowing, your instincts, to guide you to the places you need to be. Rather than moving into a path in life due to guilt, low self esteem, or wanting to be ‘low maintenance’, instead try listening to what your body is truly telling you.

This could be a strong pull from your gut, it could be a little voice in your mind, it could be literally listening to yourself talk to better understand how you are feeling about it. Whatever your method is, I invite you to try following it, and see where you end up as a result.

What alignment looks like for you may not make sense to others. That’s okay—your truth is yours to follow.
