Finding Joy in Waiting

by Nanci Bradley

Life generally moves quite quickly, especially if you live in the city as I do. We get used to being busy, always having projects to focus on or things to tick off our to-do list. But sometimes, we reach a period of life where nothing new is really happening. Maybe there are still things to do, but they don’t really feel like they are progressing you on any larger journey – they are just the usual routines that we follow in our daily life.

This sense of being stuck in place, that no matter what you try and do, you can’t seem to progress in particular goals within your life, can be incredibly frustrating.

It can feel like a waste of valuable time, to be stuck in this position, waiting for the next thing to happen.

Perhaps a work project has come to a temporary standstill, you are struggling to find a partner who aligns with you, or you just can’t seem to get ahead financially.

No matter what it is, there is a sense that you are stuck in your current position, with no way to continue progressing in your goal.

When the Universe is Blocking You

When roadblocks begin to appear in our path, it generally means one of two things. Either, the universe is trying to divert you onto a new path or the universe is forcing you to wait for the right timing.

And when you are in the midst of the experience, it can be difficult to determine which of these is true. You may begin questioning:

Should I be doing something else? Or should I just be waiting?

There is no ‘one size fits all’ answer to these questions, it is something that must be determined on a case by case basis. You could ask for particular signs from the Universe to give an indication, or tune into your own intuitive guidance to make the call about what to do next.

But in my experience, the most important thing in either case, is learning to detach from the outcome.

For example, if you are desperate to find a life partner – it is something that is almost always on your mind and you are constantly dedicated to searching for. But no matter what you do, you cannot seem to find someone who fits with you. You begin to question whether you are meant to find someone at all, or if you are meant to walk the path of friendship and family instead.

Whichever answer is true, when you detach from the outcome and pivot your focus to another area in your life, you can either begin attracting the partner more easily or create a life that does not require a partner to feel fulfilled.

The Pivot

A crucial aspect of detachment, for me, is the decision to pivot my focus to somewhere else.

Obviously, doing the inner work to emotionally and mentally detach from the outcome is a crucial part of the process. But in my experience, it is when I begin to follow through on that by no longer making the goal the center of my universe, that my emotional and mental state fully follow.

Finding new passions and goals can allow you to enhance your experience of life and feel more in flow, as you begin to flow in a new direction.

For example, you might decide to:

  • Dedicate more of your energy into your hobbies
  • Add new activities into your routine
  • Focus more on your work
  • Spend time with the people you care about

There are so many options available to you, but the most important part is finding the method to use your energy productively and begin finding your flow in life once again.

My personal way of life is – if I am feeling stuck and desperate, I know it is time for me to begin doing something new.

After all, if I just keep pushing against a metaphorical brick wall, I am just dedicating my time to becoming more and more frustrated. But if I pivot in a new direction, knowing that the path I feel blocked in will still be there for me to find again later if I need, I dedicate my energy to actually enjoying my life and feeling that I am progressing forward on my path.

I know how I would prefer to spend my time.
