Stepping Away from Your Life – to Begin Creating a New One
by Nanci Bradley
Sometimes we need to step away from our everyday life to remember who we really are. I experienced that very strongly only a few weeks ago when I spent a long weekend down the coast, watching Dr Joe Dispenza videos and meditating with a group of amazing women.
Before I left, I didn’t even realise how foggy, disconnected and lacklustre I was feeling. It was only the contrast and shifts I felt when I was away from my everyday life that I remembered how bright, bubbly and vivacious I usually feel.
Beforehand, I was getting lost in the physical habits, routines and worries of my everyday world. Not truly feeling connected to my passion, creativity and love for life.
And it wasn’t anything in particular that led to this state, it was simply a lack of awareness and effort to be something different.
I just got lost in a routine.
Stepping Away from Life
The biggest benefit of physically going somewhere else at some point when you are on your personal journey of growth and transformation, is the ability to get out of your daily routine and do something different.
As a core aspect of Dr Joe Dispenza’s work reiterates, how can we expect to become a new person, when we keep doing the same things that we have always done?
Although I personally enjoy most aspects of my routine, I noticed that a central part of it involves escapism, especially into stories. And so, when I become over reliant on this aspect of my life and forget to enjoy what I am actually doing in each moment, the gradual descent into disconnection begins.
This trip away gave me the change in routine that I needed to remind myself of the beauty of the present, rather than getting in the habit of always looking ahead to when I can get lost in a story again.
By stepping away from your routines, you can begin to notice how they actually make you feel. And that bigger picture perspective can allow you to formulate the specific changes you may want to integrate into your life, so you can begin to feel something new instead.
Returning to Everyday Life
And then comes the test. Actually returning to your everyday life and trying to create these new habits and routines in an environment that is constantly reminding you of who you were before you took a step away.
In many ways, this is the hardest part. It is much easier to create change when there is nothing to remind you or prompt you about who you used to be.
Whether the change is big or small, there will always be reminders of the old way of living when you return home.
For me, it was the evening routine that I have at home to wind down from my day, which is something I enjoy but also means that I need to remember to be more conscious during the day. Rather than only thinking about when I can go home and read another chapter of my book or watch another episode of my TV show.
It has been a test, even if it is only a small one, as it is only a minor change in my life.
Some days are more successful than others. But each day I try to start fresh, reminding myself of how alive, connected and in love with my life I feel when I remember to stay conscious throughout my day.
In Summary
In my opinion, the benefit of getting away from your everyday routine cannot be overstated. It can give you the opportunity to gain a bigger picture perspective of how you are existing in your everyday life and what you might want to do differently.
But the biggest challenge comes when you need to wake up every morning and recommit to that new version of yourself, rather than getting lost in who you no longer want to be, simply because it is a habit.
Choosing who you want to be and committing to make that person into a reality every single day is a massive undertaking, but in my opinion, it is always worth it. I am always worth it.
