Backslide or Breakthrough?

As a practitioner, it is important for me to be a supportive and centred presence within sessions. To allow the client any space and assistance they may need to make realisations about their patterns and begin their own healing journey.

However, that does not mean that I am always centred in my own life. Generally, I am characterised as a gentle, peaceful presence but recently I had a bit of a meltdown.

My Backslide

Something new appeared in my life, a new possibility, and suddenly I was spiralling. My chest was tight, my head was spinning, and my body was living in survival mode. 

This is something that many people experience, for some people it is rare and for others it is daily. It can make you feel like you have returned back to the old you, like all that progress you made was for nothing.

But maybe, a change of perspective is in order about backsliding and breaking down.

Changing Your Perspective

As we move through life, there are inevitably going to be challenges, whether they are big or small. And we can choose to run away from them, to confront them head on, or to figure out a combination of the two that works best for us. 

As these challenging events occur, it can also trigger something within us. The alarm bells within our body and subconscious mind might start ringing.

When our mind, body and soul begin screaming at us in this way, the best possible thing to do is to listen. What is happening in your life at this moment? What has triggered this breakdown? Is this alarm bell trying to tell me that I am moving back into a bad situation or is it a false alarm resulting from previous trauma?

If you are having trouble figuring it out yourself – through journaling or meditation – seek out some help in the form of friends, family, therapy, or other practitioners.

My Breakthrough

When I went within myself and analysed my own reaction, I realised that my alarm bells were ringing for a false alarm. This new occurrence in my life had triggered deep past life fears that meant a seemingly benign event actually seemed life or death to my system.

This allowed me to have a profound breakthrough and realise that this deep seated fear, that I had no idea was within me, had meant I was blocking all sorts of wonderful things within my life.

With that in mind, I pushed through the fear and the false alarm bells, moving towards this new situation in my life. And just by doing so, in the weeks following my life has opened up to so many other joyful new occurrences.

Conclusion

In your case, the situation may be totally different. The alarm bells may be telling you that you are falling into old patterns of behaviour and belief – they may be telling you that there are other, better options available to you.

Or, you may be experiencing what I did. False alarm bells overreacting based on previous experience, that has no relevance to the current situation.

In both cases, these situations can be a gift filled with new knowledge about yourself and your patterns that will enable you to create a myriad of new possibilities in your life.

By changing your perspective, you can shift how you react to these situations and continue moving towards the bright future that you dream of and are creating.

Instead of thinking ‘I have made no progress at all, I am the exact same as I was back then, feeling this same feeling’.

Changing your mindset to ‘Wow, that is a very strong reaction! I wonder what has triggered my body’s alarm bells?’

From perpetuating more fear about the situation, to becoming curious about what new, wonderful things it could bring into your life.
